Survivor Benefits

Surviving Spouse Benefit

If you are receiving SDRS retirement benefits and die, your eligible surviving spouse will receive a surviving spouse benefit. This benefit is equal to 60 percent of the benefit you were receiving at the time of your death and is payable for your spouse's lifetime with cost-of-living adjustments.

Note: To qualify for death benefits, your spouse must have been married to you prior to your retirement and for at least 12 months before your death.

Remaining Account Balance

If both you and your spouse (if applicable) die before your accumulated contributions have been paid out, your named beneficiary or estate will receive any remaining balance as a lump-sum payment.
